The Green Man pewter badge is made from very fine English pewter, 3.5 cm in diameter with a metal push over clip. This particular rendering is reminiscent of medieval depictions, marginals and carvings. Jack in the Green and certain ‘Robin Hoods’ are folkloric examples.
This motif has many variations but is primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the yearly cycle of growth each spring and death each autumn. The Green Man has a long tradition within nature symbolism in many cultures from many ages worldwide, it has developed independently in the traditions of those separate cultures into the wide variety of types to be found.
